One of my favorites because of his wide range of styles is Randy Newman. The big home run scene in The Natural stands out in my mind. I also like the ragtime and jazz tracks he wrote for various movies.

Thomas Newman - American Beauty
Trevor Jones - The Last of the Mohicans (not so keen on the Randy Edelman half of the movie)
Howard Shore - Lord of the Rings
Micheal Kamen - Band of Brothers

Music for the Movies is condensed emotion - if you need to do any listening with children try the film soundtracks, you have everything in the human experience (in 15.5 seconds flat.....).

I'll put Nobuo Uematsu in, though mostly a video game composer... FFX was basicly a movie anyway.

North - Check out Dragonslayer. The soundtrack opens with trombones, a log drum and tubas in parallel 4ths. Yee-ha!

John Williams wasn't up against the rappers. They got their Oscar for Best Song. John Williams' category was Best Score.

There is a great Family Guy episode where Brian becomes an award winning adult film director.
"Best original score in an adult film...Ron Jones (Staff composer for family guy), Walter Murphy (ditto), and Jon Williams.
