So I've been having some childcare issues and I haven't been able to attend our normal band practices. In my spare time I picked a solo to keep my chops in good shape and over the past month I've worked out all the bugs. Today I asked our director if I could play the solo in the lobby of the auditorium as our guests arrive for the next show... (last month a sax quartet played the pre-show) He liked the idea and I sent him a recording of the solo and the sheet music for his review.
In his next email he asked if another tuba player could possibly play with me??? Not fully understanding his request, I replied by saying that I wanted to play this solo by myself and if he wanted a duet that I would search for one...
He replied back by saying; "We open the doors of the auditorium 30-45 minutes before our shows. If you and another tuba player could put together something before the concert that would be great. You can play your solo and the other person can play his solo, rotating back & forth. It's up to you, the time is all yours."
Excuse me??? What did he just say???? The time is all yours??? Okay so I'm still in recovery mode! What a great opportunity and can we say "equal rights" for tuba players!!! Okay so maybe it is just the pre-show but tuba players rarely get any recognition! Now the real work begins!
The other tuba player is none other than Dave (bandmaster) Schaafsma... So here's your wakeup call Dave!!!
