I have his F tuba mouthpiece. I like the feel of it, it just didn't work well with my miraphone so I don't use it any more. For some reason it made the bell vibrate more than other mothpieces. It worked pretty well on other horns I've tried though.

I have not tried one, but I heard Tony Clement play on one when I visited his shop in Campbell, CA. He had some nice tubas in his stash. I think he was playing a Gronitz CC when I heard him using his signature mouthpiece. The guy is a monster player, a real animal.

CLEMENTS MP'S

Post by DonnieMac »

I've been playing on 2 of Clements Orchestral MP's. In fact for a first time I feel I'm "locked in" to this MP. By "locked in" I mean when I switch over to another MP, even as a temporary experiment, the other MP doesn't work for me as it once did. I told this to Bob Reeves and his reply was "don't lose that MP because no matter what you won't get back that feel, even with a duplicate."
What I find different with the Clements MP is the abrupt inner edge of the rim. The sound seems to start quicker than, for example, with a Doug Elliott 132 TU rim or with a PT-88.
My Clements MP's are used on a Rudy 5/4 (fat receiver with a French taper) and on a Hirs 4/4 (normal European receiver) CC horns as well as on a Nirschl EE b.

I had all 4 of tony's mouthpieces and used them exclusively for a year. At first I loved them, as they took away many articulation problems I am now finding out I still have. At the time I was playing heavily but not demanding stuff. What I noticed was that I got tired pretty quick in the upper register. After a bit of research I decided to switch to a PT-50+ which is very similar to his Orchestra mouthpiece. The difference was the rim was slightly softer which worked way better for my face. I then realized that tony and i have opposite face structures. Tony- thin lips, awesome player. Me- not thin lips, not awesome player. I think at least the first half of that comparison is why they didnt work for me as well as they have for some (most people around this area have tried them, and I've heard lots of great things about them from others, myself included until recently)
