Bb/F

Post by XtremeEuph »

I was looking up descriptions on some models of euphoniums and I came across two professional compensating horns. apart from the others the key is Bb/F rather than just Bb........... (btw if im right plz dont go into huge explanations :D)

Does this just mean if you lock down the 4th valve, it puts it into the key of F?

Exactly. A 4-valve compensating euphonium with the 4th valve pressed down might be considered a small 3-valve tuba in F.

Well, as a practical matter, does a euphonium ever sound as good as a tuba? :P

Just like the F trigger on a bass trombone...

without the buzzsaw sound

Well... if you want to look at it that way, you can. You can do the same thing with a 4V Eb tuba. You can take the spring out of the 4th valve and use Bb fingerings. ... BUT... who would want to! Usually... adding the extra valve and the associated tubing/crooks makes 'em sound like s**t!
