This should be something a little easier to find, maybe not. Symphony orchestra recordings used tubas in the string bass section prior to the introduction to the electronic microphone in the studio in the late 1920s. Try to find some recordings (made prior to 1929) of symphony orchestra music which does not have tuba parts, yet the bass section is made up of brass basses, not string ones.
