Dial soap commercial

Post by Hank74 »

Would anyone know the big guy who was playing that 3/4 tuba in a Dial soap commercial recently?

I don't think he's actually playing, he very rarely pushes down a valve.

Looking at this commercial once again tonight, it could be that he was playing the open notes only, like the high D, middle B, middle F, and even the deep B.

You are paying way too much attention to watch someone who isn't even really playing tuba.

I agree, do you actually think they're going to seek out a tuba player when wanna be actors are so plentiful??? Imagine the audition for that, would it be behind a screen?! :D

"The committee would like the candidate to repeat the first phrase, this time playing softer during the voice-over, and paying particular attention to the blats indicated at rehearsal '5'... "
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Not only is this guy not really playing the tuba...

I don't think they hired a real tuba player to do the part.

At least around here (Toronto, Canada) anyhow, they always emphasize that the people who audition must be able to play the instrument in question. You bring your instrument to the audition and play something for the auditioners. Just to play Devil's Advocate, the fellow in the commercial might have some knowledge of tuba playing - when he was being filmed for the spot they might not have had the background music scored yet, and he could've been miming to a completely different playback tape. Just a thought. Besides that, who knows what went on in the editing room, and who made the editing decisions? How many times have you seen a drummer in a commercial where his stick is up in the air but the drum is heard being hit on the soundtrack?
The tubist in the commercial is only seen for seconds at a time - he could've depressed a valve or two and it could've been edited out. Just some food for post-production thought. Can you tell where I've spent most of my career??
