I'm interested in hearing from others who play in or have experience with Shrine bands. Email me direct if you will. I have several questions but there's no need to tie up Sean's bandwidth unless others are interested.

I only know that, when I studied with him in grad school, Ev Gilmore said the best deals to be had on vintage used tubas were to be had in Masonic Lodges that were no longer in use.

HEY! I can respond to both! I played with a Shrine "tea dance" band for years while my wife was in medical school. We would play "Stars Fell on Alabama" while she sat in the corner with her book light and studied. The neatest thing we did was to play a yearly memorial service for all the Shriners who had passed that year. They had a book of hymns arranged for big band. Way cool! I also played for the Shrine circus when it came to town - loud and fast.
Before I moved away, one of the guys asked if I was interested in some old horns. I bought two Eb peckhorns (Pan-American, bell front, satin silver with gold wash bells) and an Eb helicon (silver)... all for $100 total.
