USAF Heritage of America Band Tuba Audition....for real!!!

Hello again...

I know, I know, you probably think that I am the boy who cried wolf, but (again) I am pleased to announce that the USAF Heritage of America Band will be having an opening for tuba. The audition is scheduled for Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at 10:00am. If you received materials from the last time that we announced the audition, please hold onto them as we will be using the same packet.

Congratulations to Brent Harvey for being selected for a tuba position with the Air Force "Heritage of America" Band at Langley AFB this past Tuesday. I know there are some things to work out in regards to the hiring freeze and such, but Brent deserves much kudos for this accomplishment. Great job, Brent!

Yes, Brent did his undergrad at the University of Minnesota while I was there. I consider him a incredible tuba player and an even better friend. When he called me to tell me he won the audition all I could ask him is, "How did the others feel they were beat by a BBb?" I know the horn doesn't matter, it's the player, but man what a great sound he has on that Holton. Kudos to Brent.

I just heard from a VERY reliable source that the actual winner of this position is Ed Vinson, a grad student at Juilliard. Brent was the runner up and may be offered a job with another band. Ed is most certainly interested in taking the job at Langley.

So there is the straight scoop as I have been informed.

Yeah...Ed text messaged me the other night that he did in fact win the gig and seemed VERY excited. Excited enough to accept it.

This is a matter for a higher authority than me to speculate, but I know that Brent has been offered a position with the Langley band. He is a member of the National Guard and certain matters must be worked out since he is considered "prior service." I understand Ed has also been offered a position. It sounds like congratulations are in order for both.

The term "winning" an audition is an interesting one. I don't think it really means anything unless you are offered a job. In this case, both seem to have been offered something. From here, I think it is better to let the AF decide how they are going to handle things.

Congrats again to both for playing very well at the audition.

I don't know Brent's specifics, but in a more general sense it is not at all uncommon to offer more than one person a job in the same band from the same audition. From the US Army Band's past 4 tuba auditions there have been 7 tubists hired as an example.

I was at the audition and before the audition, we were told that there are two positions. One at Langley and one more at "another" band. They announced Ed and Brent as winners, so I don't know who exactly won the audition or is being offered the Langley position....

At the UNCG Wind Ensemble concert a few hours ago, the conductor honored the members who would not be joining the ensemble next fall. Brent was among them because he, (and I paraphrase) "will be joining the Air Force (I think) Band in Virginia that he won an audition for last week," or something like that...

Brent emailed this to me;

"I just wanted to let you know that I was offered a job with the Air Force,
but the job is completely dependent on whether or not I can get a waiver
from the Air Force since I am considered prior service and that the hiring
freeze issue is in affect. This offer was also dependent on whether or not
you took the job at Langley after this hiring freeze was lifted. If you go
to Langley, then I go to the other position, or if you pick the other
position, then I will go to Langley."
