Hey, I have the Meinl and the Prestige horn to try right now, and let me tell you they are pretty nice... (actually enjoying the MW 451 more atm) . ANyway, the Besson comes with a SM3 mp (nice ) and im enjoying it, just hard to get used to. I was curious if there is much of a difference in the SM4 because theres a box with a brand new one included in the case but i have no idea if im permitted to try it during the rental....havent been able to find out. Is it worth giving it a go? (if i do try it she wont be terribly mad or anything btw)
If you're going as big as the SM3, I highly reccomend the Demondrae Thurman model put out by Warburton. Very full and rounded sound, not as bright as the SM series in my opinion. I'm not sure if Warburton has them back in production yet (the factory burned to the ground a few months ago and was rebuilt), you should call and ask. Hope this helps!
I think the simple answer would be to try the SM4 and see if it works better for you than the SM3. If you are careful with it, it can go right back into the packaging, no harm done.
Don't forget, there is also a SM3.5. If the 3's too big and woofy and the 4 feels a little too small............
Incidentally I play both the 3 and the 3.5 for my work depending on the job.

I used to play on an SM3.5 but now I play on an SM4. For me the SM4 works better "all around". I have never tried an SM3 though - only the 3.5, 4, and 5.

the 3 is wider and more open backbore... it's my mouthpiece for doing tuba parts on euph.
Ha thanks for forcing it out of me.............I am jumping from a student model to a Pro horn. I am only on a Standard school owned Yami 201 . Therefore i am used to the pea shooter of a mouthpiece (Conn 12C)

to be quite honest, a 12c would be the wrong mouthpiece for a euphonium.
There is alot of voodoo in finding the right mouthpiece for a horn, but a 12c is a peashooter tbone mouthpiece. t would not produce the right type of tone.
If you're on that horn for a couple more weeks you should try a bigger mouthpiece... 6.5AL's are usually around bandrooms.
lol great........actually i dont have any other small shank mouthpieces lying around that i could use. But i could probably get the person at the dealer to send me one on loan for like a month, she wouldnt care. Im pretty sure the horn came with that mpc though ... strange.......anyway my band director gave me 100% on tone quality though heh.

I attempted to order in some euro shank models from the Besson Canadian distributor and got large shank mouthpieces... I believe they're still at the store. Can't remember what the plating is on them... brand new and we didn't mark them up much... SM2 and SM4. If you want to try them out you can, as I said, they have a very low markup on them because it was a wrong order.
