Sounds like a fairly obscure music festival.
We loaded up our whole P.A. and trailered it to Caseville, Michigan to play their "Cheeseburger in Caseville" weeklong festival. They put us up on a 50 foot boat in the harbor and we played two nights in a smoke-filled bar and an open air concert in the park with the rest of the week to wander around listening to many great bands we never heard of. The burgers were yummy and we were well-treated. "Cheeseburger"is well done and well attended by Northern Michiganders but nobody in my neck of the woods ever heard of it.

I have heard about this one for years, but have never attended. Everything I have heard has been good. The camp has been around for a long time... 50 years according to their website. I remember first hearing about it back when I was in high school, many years ago. It's up the mountain south west from Palm Springs, CA. That's all I know.

The website says the Music Festival is in its fifth year. The Festival Wind Ensemble is being conducted this year by Stephen Piazza. The know Steve, he is very good.

I went to Idyllwild back in 2000. I was a freshman in college, and enjoyed the experience. I got to play in the wind ensemble with Steve Piazza, as well as Bartok Concerto for Orchestra with Larry Livingston. There were several very good players, and some of the brass players were as old as 27-28. I enjoyed it as a young player, but I wouldn't go expecting to play in a professional-level ensemble. The teachers are very good, and its a nice place to be.

I attended this festival for 5 years straight in my jr. high and high school years. It is really a great festival for students of all ages. They offer many programs for varied age/skill levels. I did the Youth Symphonic Band with Dave Evans for 2 years, then the Wind Ensemble/Orchestra with Piazza and Livingston for 3. Yes, it is true, there are better ensembles...but especially for tuba (taught by my former teacher Doug Tournquist) I would highly recommend it. Doug is an amazing performer/teacher. The festival offers lots of great music and great people. Normally they have Quite a variance in skill levels, ranging from new high school students to almost professionals from around the globe. It is a great opportunity and I would recommend at least a summer there for the expirience. The scenery is AMAZING. One of the most beautiful places in California. The only reason that I have not been able to attend the past few years is because of Tanglewood and Schleswig-Holstein. If you get into a better festival I would say go. But Idyllwild is a great, worry-free environment. They also have money. If you just call and ask, they will probably give it too you. Just call and ask to talk to Steve Piazza or Dave, and tell them you would like to attend but money is an issue. They will get you out there. Have fun! -Joe Muro

We normally don't think of Idyllwild as being close to Palm Springs. You drive from L.A., like you're going to Palm Springs and take Highway 243 at Banning (if you remember the original version of the movie D.O.A., this was the town Edmund O'Brien's character came from). Then you drive down the highway and you can't miss the place. It's the only town in the mountains on Highway 243. I used to go to church camp across the street, which was next door to the Jewish camp. Between the Jewish camp and the Music camp, they made it awfully difficult for us Baptists to sleep at night with all of the noise!

Incidentally, this is not an obscure music festival. It's well respected and it's attached to the University of Southern California. I went to a different music camp that was priced inexpensively enough that I could go to both the church camp and music camp.
