DVD Burning Questions

I've recently downloaded some DVDs in .avi format. I used Winavi to convert the .avi to dvd files and then DVD shrink to get the files into audio_ts and video_rs folders. Then I tried to use Nero and DVDClone to burn the DVD. So the DVD will play on the computer but when I try it in a DVD player connected to the TV, I always get this error message "Prohibited by Area Limitations." Any computer whizzes out there? Thanks! If I can get this to work, I'll send you a DVD!

I hope you do not get it to work at all. What you are doing is stealing the intellectual property of the producers of whatever DVD you are downloading. Believe it or not, it's against the law.

There are copy protections that usually work against bonehead amateurs at the bear minimum.

And where does he say that these are *commercial* DVDs that he's downloaded?

Good point. If they're public domain DVDs, power to him.

They are family videos of my nephew's graduation from preschool. My brother has a DVD camcorder and emailed me the video. Just so you know...

I appreciate the "bonehead amateur" quote. I sometimes wonder why kids are apprehensive to posting on this site and now I know.

The "bonehead amateurs" quote I believe was geared toward the sorry state of dvd copy protection. He is quite correct in saying only folks that have never tried to rip* a dvd or just dont know much about the process are the only ones who can't do it.

With that being said, any good piece of video software (such as Nero or Pinnacle) can take care of this for you with no problem at all. I personally like the Nero.

*rip meaning get the info off of a copy protected DVD

People in general are way too quick to pass judgement... For this BBS, you'd better watch what you say, how you say it, how you spell it and god forbid that you piss someone off. After all, the "concerned viewer of posts" will start a poll about you...

Along the same lines, I'm trying to find decent software to create a slideshow for my family pictures & videos and then burn to DVD to share with my family. Any recomendations???

I have tried Nero and Sony Vegas (way over my head) and a couple other free ware DVD software and I just can't get the DVDs to play in my home DVD player, just my computer. Therein lies the problem. I looked through a few online blogs and help sites and followed all their suggestions (see my first post) and I'm still stuck. I guess I'll just have to watch on my PC.

Afterdawn.com has been a great source for me for anything involving dvd / video burning. Their BBS covers all topics from picking a good burner to which software should you get (kind of like pistons or rotors).

Pinnacle Studio 10 works great. That is what I did all the Jacobs videos with.

Windows Movie Maker to create the video file and then whatever cheap software came with the dvd burner to create the dvd from the movie file. I just showed a group of sixth graders how to do this in about 15 minutes last week and turned them loose. They created a slideshow for their end of the year celebration with minimal help from me.

I burned the dvd, but they created the slideshow with movie maker. It's easy to add music (legally obtained and licensed, of course) and to blend it with existing sound. The software is not too versatile, but it gets the job done with a not-too-steep learning curve.
