It's unfortunate that this is often the case with domestic violence (which can go both directions, but usually the stronger beats up on the weaker.)

The recipient of the violence either accepts the notion that the violence is somehow her fault, or she believes that loss of the partner will result in financial disaster.

Sometimes they're both violent drunks. The one couple I knew (many years ago) who regularly engaged in domestic violence were both alcoholics; you wouldn't believe the mess their kids were. They were divorced but he was living with her in the house. I knew from personal experience that both of them were violent when drunk, and someone who couldn't defuse that would end up engaged in the middle of it. First and last time I was in a band with alcoholics.

Don't know if would be worse to be in a band with alkys or smack shooters. I had to work with two guys shooting smack for a few months.
They were O.K. when they had some.
