Shank truing tool question

I bought one of these tools recently and am practicing on my vintage 24AW, which hit the pavement a time or two during college marching seasons. However, the technique I am using isn't getting the job done; I simply twist the tool into the shank as deeply as possible. Even though the end of the shank is relatively thin on these old Bachs, I am having trouble moving the metal back to round.

Are there any tricks that would help? Do I need to enlist the help of an interior lineman type?

Just twisting the tool won't get the job done. I usually drive the tool into the shank with a few taps of a rawhide or plastic mallet... then, use a dent hammer with a large flat face to tap the shank against the tool. There's no worry about getting the tool stuck. It's going to come right out after a few taps with the dent hammer. Does a pretty nice job!
