machining kelly mouthpiece shanks

Howdy fellow tubenetters,

Has anyone ever done this? Does anyone have any suggestions on doing it? I bought some discontinued and cheap Kelly trumpet mouthpeces for some bugles for my son's scout troop and they stick out a bit more than I would like. Of course for a bugle it doesn't really matter and they still sound better than the old Rexcraft mouthpieces, but i figured if it could be done perhaps I would look into getting it done.

Try the Kelly cornet mouthpieces. They are more likely to fit the bugles.

Actually, I have played an old Rexcraft bugle here and there occasionally as I bugle occasionally for my son's cub scout pack. Bugle mouthpieces have a different shank and taper, which is larger than a cornet, but smaller than a trumpet.

Re actually machining the shank, try surfing the web generally for the machining of Lexan, and you might find something.

OK, it's my turn. My Kelly 18 fits into my small Besson receiver the usual little bit, and since it's a lightweight mouthpiece, it stays secure. But I'd like to get it into the receiver properly.

Now that some time has passed, it's time to ask again: has anybody shaved or milled down the shank of a Lexan Kelly?
