I don't think you want to pay what it costs to service a VW. I know I don't.

My former Volvo (RIP) was cheaper to service than my girlfriend's Passat TDI. I really dig the TDI (lots of torque), but I wouldn't want to own it out of warranty. My best friend and his wife have a TDI Jetta wagon. The Jetta gets 50mpg highway with a manual gearbox. The Passat with an automatic gets 38.

If you want a wagon, I would look at the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe or the Honda Element. Neither is pretty but get pretty good MPGs. Even the Scion xB would be a better choice in terms of functionality and fuel economy. If you're looking at new, I'd take a look at the Mazda 5 wagon.

All the best,

Christian

I'd scratch the Honda Element off that list. Everyone that I have talked to about them say the gas mileage isn't that great (mid 20's at best). My Vibe gets low 30's (almost all freeway) and with the seats all in there upright position I can fit a golf trunk organizer (24"x10"x14"), my golf clubs, and my tuba. With all of the seats folded down except the 2 front seats, the cargo area is listed at 54 cubic feet.

I don't blame you wanting a Jetta diesel wagon (I wanted one as well) but the used ones sell so quickly that you dont even get a chance to get into a bidding war for them, or the asking price is so high that its not worth it.

The auto industry technical mags are saying that more diesel models will be coming to the U.S. soon. One reason given is that low-sulphur diesel fuel is mandated this fall, and that will facilitate meeting pollution standards. Particulate filters in the exhaust stream seem to be working too. On top of that, the hot driver's cars in Europe these days are turbo diesel versions of models that are already imported, and European trends often make their way here eventually.
It is impossible to make things foolproof because fools are so ingenious.

Are you willing to buy out of state? The bay area Craig's list has tons of listings of diesel VWs.

Ken F.
A 2003 that's a salvage title with more than 4 days left to go at over 17 grand? There's no way I'd even think about something like this without a mechanic checking it over to see that the quarter panel was the only thing that was damaged in the crack-up.

Wonder if it'll make it to 25K?
