Marzan Tubas

I've searched the archives and haven't been able to turn up anything about the production of Marzan tubas. Does anyone know how many of the horns B & M produced? How about the ones made by Willson? Further, I would like a breakdown of piston and rotary horns.

Well.... if the owners of these horns would simply respond with a photo and a serial number, it would be a great start! I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours! Serial number 74265...

I know James Jenkins of the Jacksonville,Fl. Symph. has a piston BBb one.It was his main orchestra instrument for many years.Don't know the serial # and he does not frequent this board.

It's a great interview but says very little about the Marzan tubas. I've just added a page to my web site and will post any pictures or comments about Marzan horns that are sent to me.

I have a CC 4 valve piston "Solo" model purchased used in 1978. I have not located a serial number. I have been told is was made by Willson. The mouthpiece receiver is stamped "Swiss Made." I took that instrument to Indiana University in January, 1979 (as I enrolled as a graduate student). Harvey Phillips told me that it's design was influenced by his (Harvey's) Conn and Mr. Marzan wanted to name it the "Phillips Model." Mr. Phillips declined the offer/idea. I have replaced the original lead pipe with one slightly larger. I like the sound of the horn. However, it plays a little tight and I would reposition the valves to fit my hand position.

As you may remember, I have a 4 valve slant rotor CC. I bought it second hand in 1978, and thus far I have not located any serial number on it. It has a 19" bell, and I believe was made by B&M.

Along with my horn, I have tried to thrash out some basic details at Kenton Scott's Horn-u-copia.
