Thirty-six years ago I was part of the Marching Illini. Tradition was that when the football team won a game, we got to march out of Memorial Stadium with our hats on backwards. If the team lost, we chanted, "Go Illini, Beat Somebody."
In the two years that I marched in the band, I wore my hat backwards twice. Every other time, I joined in that cheer.
Doesn't appear to have changed much in those 36 six years.
