My room is full of them!!! Everywhere I go I see another one and it's driving me nuts!

Pennsylvania's got bugs? I thought we invented them down here.
We cower in our homes at dusk so the mosquitoes won't carry us off.
Another great concern is roaches, (southern belles instruct us to call them Palmetto bugs so people won't think we're unclean).
We got roaches so big that when you step on one, it crunches so loud you can't hear the T.V..

The other day, I took my youngest son to see "Snakes on a Plane". Good monster/horror/thriller if you get into that sort of thing. So, we get home and I go into our basement, which is carpeted, and clean (with a large train layout taking up most of it) and I see a 2 ft. snake slithering acorss the floor. It scared the crap out of me, especially after just seeing the movie. I never saw a snake or any other pests, aside from bugs, in my house before. I ended up catching it with barbecue tongs and throwing it in the yard.

I don't consider snakes or spiders to be pests. Both are predatory and their presence signifies that there are other real pests around.

One year, we had a terrible mole problem in the yard. Nothing, not traps or poison made the slightest dent in the population. One day, I'm walking through the grass and I almost stumble over a big sassy ratsnake. My mole problem was history within two months. Never saw the snake after that; I suppose it just moved on, probably a few pounds heavier.

I guess I feel the same way about buzzards. I like to watch the graceful way these big birds fly. When some car hits a deer or raccoon or squirrel, instead of burying or liming the carcass, I'll just haul it off the road and put it somewhere the buzzards can find it. It's usually down to bones and hide in less than a week.

Would you guess that these mosquitos are perhaps just into puberty, but not quite old enough to legally drink?

Speaking of cockroaches (Palmetto bugs), have you ever seen the ones that fly? Those are scary as hell!

Just about any cockroach with wings can fly. The REALLY big ones in Atlanta definitely prefer just to scurry around, but if you spray them with Raid they'll fly away. It is a very disconcerting thing to see, for sure. While the only good roach is a dead roach, the only surefire way I've found to kill roaches is to smash them.

As far as the Mosquito problem goes--get rid of ALL standing water in or near your house.

I'm sure that you folks down south have huge palmetto bugs, but I've been surprised occasionally by one of these critters flying onto the porch at night:



It's called a "ponderous borer" and is about 3 in. long and flies. Sometimes at night you can hear them crashing around on the forest floor. They feed on decomposing Douglas Fir, so they're not dangerous to people or trees. The larvae (found in rotting logs) are also huge and pretty disgusting.

Chuck(G), I have come across a swarm of these creatures more than once. They are very large and squishy and can wreck cars if they accumulate enough on the roads.
Talk about an insect, my wife's cousin, the songwriter, more than qualifies.
