Georgia Tech Tubas

Post by Doug@GT »

So for all you political junkies out there, you know already that Tom Friedman had some really nice things to say about Georgia Tech in the second edition of The World Is Flat, in which he interviews Institute President G. Wayne Clough.

Well, Dr. Clough was kind enough to mention the band, and one of the things that made it into Friedman's book is Clough bragging that we have 24 tubas in the band. Not to be outdone, we marched 42 tubas Saturday night.

The link below takes you to a picture we got of about half the section. Yours truly is on the 45 (with the water bottle strapped to the tuba).

Just had to brag a little.

judging by the person on your left - you must be incredibly tall.

What with your section mates wearing caps except the three of you?

Good idea with the water bottle. You never know when you might need a little drinkie-poo.

Doug---looks good, and tubas in the front!! What a novel idea??!! BTW, I was pulling for you guys on Saturday night, mostly just because of my eternal hatred for Notre Dame football. They lost me when they beat Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl featuring Jerome Bettis flipping off the camera after scoring the put-away touchdown. Anyways, see you guys in Athens this year!!! Oh, and it'd be great to see you at tubachristmas again!!!

Thanks, Cale! Interestingly, putting the tubas up front presents some unique problems because we're so used to listening forward that we would frequently play over the whole band in rehearsal.

I'll try to come over and say hey when Tech plays U[sic]GA this year. Hopefully that won't be too dangerous!

To clear up confusion from another post--the relatively tall one isn't me. I'm not that pretty  . Also, he's on the 35, not the 45. And the folks on either side are indeed very short.
