Mouthpiece for Conn 32K

Post by WakinAZ »

Just bought an old 32K sousaphone as a second horn. What mouthpieces are you all using with your 32Ks or 15Ks? Anybody know what Conn originally shipped these out with and what the modern equivalent would be?

Thanks

Those horns probably shipped with a Conn 2 mouthpiece. Try starting with something in the range of a Bach 18. If you don't want to make much of an investment, buy a Kelly 18.... Lexan, for $25-30.

I agree, these probably came with a Conn 2, which I believe is equivalent in interior profile to a Helleberg 7B.

I use a 24AW, a 24W and a Kellyberg. Still not happy. Suggest you try other ones first. Of the above, the 24AW works best but is slightly flat in the upper range. The horn is great though.

Thanks all for the input. This horn was shipped to me with a Bach-esque mouthpiece that revealed it was a Conn 7 when I polished the tarnish and the seller's spit deposits off it **fights gag reflex**.

Seems to be similar to a Bach 18 or so (or slightly bigger), but I can't find any info on it here on elsewhere on the web. Any of you Conn-o-philes out there know what the specs are? I'm not a good judge of depth, backbore etc.

(Yes, I will quit futzing around and just play the thing when I get the horn out of the shop, but if I get to like it I'd like to get a backup/equivalent.)

Cheers
