Hopefully not another stupid mouthpiece question...

Post by quinterbourne »

I'm trying to change mouthpieces and I need a bit of advice.

I've been playing on a PT-50 and a Yamaha Canadian Brass (Dallenbach) model. Both are very different - the PT-50 is wide (33.0) and deep... the Yamaha is medium-wide (32.28), "semi-shallow" and quite light (in regards to mass).

What I'm looking for is a mouthpiece about as deep as the PT-50 with about the same inner rim diameter as the Yamaha (so I'm looking for about 32.2-32.5) and needs to be somewhat heavier (like the PT-50 but NOT heavy/mega-weight). Also needs to have a funnel cup.

I want something deep enough to give a nice tone like the Perantucci, yet not so wide so I don't need to work as much in the upper register. I think the lightness of the Yamaha gives the sound a lot of colour, but I'm looking for a bit of a broader sound and I figure a bit of a heavier mouthpiece could help with that.

So, I am considering:
Conn Helleberg
Shilke Helleberg I or II
Denis Wick 1
Canadian Brass "Arnold Jacobs"
Warburton "Arnold Jacobs"

I can't find very much information at all about the last two pieces, so if you could let me know some IDs of those (and perhaps descriptions/comments) that would be great.

If you have any other suggestions that you think may meet my requirements, super!

I'm just looking for some information to guide me to certain mouthpieces to try out.

Thanks for any help.

for the canadian brass "arnold jacobs" mouthpiece, go the the canadian brass website. Im not sure if it gives the measurement, but that is were it is. Also, a long time ago, a thread had a link to a list of the most popular mouthpieces, and thier measurements, you might want to try that.

gool luck

I did find the Canadian Brass "Arnold Jacobs" model on their website but there weren't any dimensions or even any descriptions of it. I know my teacher has one so I might be able to coax her into lending it to me sometime.

The Wick 1L (since you have the "standard" receiver, make sure if you get one it is the 1L and not the 1, which is the smaller receiver for the older Besson tubas like mine) gives a really broad tone, but it is so deep it can be hard to control.

If you can find a Bach 18 that is larger than "spec," like mine, which is also @ 32.5 or 1.28 inches id, the rounded bottom of the cup can reinforce overtones so you can shade your tone color. I know, with the PT series and all the stainless mouthpieces floating around, and the fact it has a rounded cup instead of a funnel cup, it is not the "hip" mouthpiece of the day, but it should not be overlooked in your consideration from what I get out of your description of what you are looking for.

The Canadian Brass Arnold Jacobs model was made by Warburton and marketed by Kelly, so availability may be an issue, since Terry got his higher brass facilities up first after recovering from his factory fire.

The GW Taku, Williwaw & Diablo have the cup id diameter you are looking for.

As I posted elsewhere, there is a good comparison chart for diameter at:

Yeah, I've used that chart from iBowTie before. Thing is, the Warburton/Canadian Brass "Arnold Jacobs" models are not on the chart... unless the "Arnold Jacobs Std (Kelly)" at 31.75 is the equivalent. It would also be nice if they had the exact measurement beside each piece in parentheses.

I'm really interested in the dimensions for the Warburton/Canadian Brass "Arnold Jacobs" models. If anyone could let me know what they are, or point me to a web page, that would be great! Is there someone I should call? They're not the easiest things to find, so I want to know more about them before I invest time searching for one.

I have a Canadian Brass/Arnold Jacobs-Solo, and my inexact measurements with a caliper come out to about 31.927, if that's any help!
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
