B&S Symphonie F,mouthpieces (Atlanta) BigPics, SOLD!

Post by cjk »

For Sale: B&S "Symphonie" model F tuba.

Made in GDR. Located in the greater Atlanta area.

The present equivalent of this tuba is the B&S model 3099/2 (AKA PT8)

Specifications:
• 5 rotary valves with thumb activated 5th valve
• Flat whole step 5th valve
• Graduated bore: 17-21 mm (0.669-0.827´´)
• Bell diameter: 420 mm (16-1/2´´)
• Height: 97 cm (38´´)
• all valves vented except #2.
• 99% raw brass with a nice patina going (there are a few specs of lacquer left)
• Serial number range 85xxx, I estimate it to be from the 1970s
• retrofit with miniball linkages on valves 1 through 4
• the most comfortable fifth valve lever of any tuba I've ever owned or played.
• The fifth valve was originally left thumb and was converted to right thumb.

I am selling this instrument because I've been able to purchase a 6 valve B&S Symphonie that plays just as well.
I've been wanting an older 6v Symphonie for years. Now that I have one, I no longer require the 5 valve instrument.
It is just sitting and not being played.

The intonation of older handbuilt B&S F tubas can vary widely. This particular 5 valve Symphonie has fantastic intonation.
Only two notes require adjustment for me. The A first space in the bass clef staff is sharp and either needs a first slide pull
or to be played third valve. The D in the staff also needs a first slide pull. That's it folks. It has none of the other Symphonie
pitch problems which I have encountered in other instruments. 5th partial A can be played open. 4th partial F is good.
No C# problems at all.

It also has a wonderful, classic, fat German F tuba sound. You really can't beat the F tuba sound of an old B&S.

This instrument also has a pretty good low C. German F tuba good, but not Yamaha good.

It has had dents and dings in its life, but it received a good going over by Lee Stofer before he relocated to Iowa. You may
notice that it has holes drilled and tapped so one can put piston valve buttons on the paddles for a different feel. This was
done by a previous owner. I tried it with some at Lee's former shop and it was neat.

It will come with a serviceable gig bag. Shipping is not included.
The horn has a nice patina, but I'd be happy to shine up the brass if that floats your boat.

My price is less than HALF of the price of a new B&S F tuba.

$3,850 US, Payment by cashier's check only. Buyer pays for shipping.

All the best

Anyone looking for a good inexpensive F tuba, this is it. Tim was kind enough to lend me this horn for a couple of weeks for play testing. I used it on a military BQ gig and the horn was spot on. The only reason I didn't buy it is I had a good lead on a Gronitz piston F at the time. Good luck selling the horn.

I heard tim play this horn years ago. It is pretty sweet. You can't go wrong with a B&S....and this is one of the really great ones.
