It reminds of when they show the worst of the losers -- people who are completely unaware of how bad they are -- of those television contest shows, like American Idol, so we can laugh at how bad they are.

Although I prefer Dowland with the straight lute music, if you must have singing with your Dowland, Emma Kirkby is hard to beat:

And Paul O'Dette always delivers the goods.

The thing that bothers me about Sting's version is not his strange voice, but his intonation. You'd think that he'd be better than that.
I wonder if a countertenor might not be the most appropriate voice for this.
The wonderful lyrics to the Pavana Lacrhimae have been some of my favorites for many years.

What bothers me from the short clips is the overdone effects, rather than a clear, vibrant tone to go with the lute and let the room or hall provide the reverb. At least at one point, Sting could carry a reasonable tenor line, so I think a higher tessitura for clarity is in order as well.

In going to Amazon to listen to the clips, one can't help but do a little looking around while one is there. I came across this gem of a recording that absolutely must be recommended. And yes, I did in fact buy a copy of it.

I'm not sure on what auspicious occasion I will need it. But, by grannies, I'll have it when that occasion comes along. (And it is better than the Sting recording.)

I don't play it often but man when I'm PMSing and in a certain mood, this album hits the spot like no other - and I ordinarily HATE metal!
