Tommy Johnson

Wow I'm really saddened by this. I only met Mr. Johnson once back in the summer of '05 when I flew out to take a lesson with him. It was one of the most inspiring and influential lessons of my life. He was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. My condolences go out to his family and friends. I was planning on doing my grad work with him, too bad I won't be able to do that, but that one hour or so I spent with him will stay with me forever.

I'd sure love to hear that clip. Although I can play a Windows Media file, I have problems playing them back when they're embedded in a web page like this (I'm on a Mac). Any chance of having the original file posted somewhere for download?

How much does THAT suck?!? I'm on a Mac, too, and the original file was an MP3. Making it a Windows Media file wasn't my idea. PutFile blows...

Tom, I think I have the music for that still around somehwere (as part of the stuff he handed out that day). Was it something like Bank Americard? Not sure... I'll dig around and see if I can locate it. If so, I can probably scan it -- but how to get it hosted somewhere for viewing? Anyone have ideas/suggestions? (If, of course, I am able to locate it.)

His performance of the Broughton Tuba Concerto at the Army Tuba Euphonium Conference stands out in my mind as one of the more outstanding performances at any of the conferences that Iâ€™ve been a part of. He will be missed. This is indeed a sad day.

For Mac users who need to play Windows Media Player links, try Flip4Mac free player. It allows wmv files to play within QuickTime usually without any kind of problem. It's posted on the Microsoft Web site as an add-on here:

Yes, Jaws was first take also. The story as I remember him telling, it was raining, so he was a little late getting to the studio that morning, went in his normal door but no! The orchestra was extra big and turned 90 degrees from normal. He was there right on call, and had to tramp through the entire setup to get to his chair. No warm up, no idea that he was about to record one of the most famous tuba appearances in all of film history.

First Take. Amazing stuff, the stories, the Bank Americard ad, and everything Tommy Johnson did. We're all the better off for his being who he is, and all the awards, citations, and thanks he got can't possibly be equal to what he gave.

My favorite is still Silverado.

The Jaws clip and the Silverado stuff are on the tape he passed around, too. I figured they were one-take stuff, since they don't pay "extra big" groups for rehearsing time. Didn't know about the no-warm-up thing, though. Dayum, that must have hurt. Those are high F#'s or G#'s at the end of those rips. Ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch. Tommy Johnson rules.

I've got the tape here... I'll have to dig out my old Walkman and find the software I used to rip the stuff. I did the commercial jingle a while ago, just for kicks. I've had a couple of PM's asking for more. We'll see...

The Silverado soundtrack is tight, and the tuba part for "Ezra's Death" was a killer. JB, if you've got a scanner, that's a good example of nightmarish sight-reading. The jingle, I could at least comprehend what was on the page. "Ezra," now that was just a big pile of notes and beams. How he did this for so many years, I'll never know.

I have access to all of that equipment at in my studio at work. I can run the cassette straight into the computer, and rip it onto a CD, MiniDisc, or whatever form of media you would like. Let me know if you would like any help.
