Gene Pokorny in Berlin, CC or BB?

Post by ubq »

I read on Windsongpress website that Daniel Barenboim invited Mr. Pokorny in 1997 to the Deutsche Staatsoper, playing in Wagners Ring. Do you know if he played CC or BB tuba?

Thanks, best regards

He played C tuba (York) as far as I understand. I imagine it was outstanding!

It was in 1996, right after the MET audition. I was in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago at the time, and was invited to play 2nd tuba (ophecleide...ha ha) on Symphonie Fantastique on their trip to Berlin.

I attended the dress rehearsal after arriving and soon found out for REAL that opera can be a BIT longer than most symphony orchestra concerts. Gene sounded amazing. I wish I had a recording of what I heard that day.

FWIW, there were some other "ringers" from the CSO brass that played. Clevenger, Gingrich, Gail Williams, C. Vernon, M. Mulcahy on bass trumpet. It was truly something wonderful.
