I have recently got a DVD player and would appreciate recommendations of the best orchestral DVD to get, particularly for the tuba playing.
I have purchased the Rattle/Berlin Phil Mahler 5 and really enjoyed!
I particularly like the late romantic and early 20th century repertoire (e.g. Tchaikovsky, Bruckner, Mahler, Strauss, Elgar, Prokofiev, Shostakovitch)

I'll second that. It is amazing to see and hear Bud Herseth play the opening bars - especially considering that he was in his late seventies at the time.Scooby Tuba wrote:I enjoy Chicago's Mahler 5 DVD quite a bit.
I also like the Wiener Philharmoniker playing Bruckner's 8. symphony live under Boulez. The concert was recorded at Sankt Florian, where Bruckner worked for most of his life.
Some of the Karajan legacy series discs are very good, but on others (such as Tchaikovsky's 4.) the quality of the recording isn't good enough. The camerawork is usually good, although it tends to focus somewhat on Karajan himself.

I don't know if it's easily available for sale nowadays but I checked this out from the fine arts library at the beginning of the semester:
Solti's "The Golden Ring" with Vienna Philharmonic in the 60's.

Mind-blowing.
