Tuba Vacancy - US Navy Band

The US Navy Band announces a vacancy for Tuba. Audition date is 29 January 2007. Here is a link to the Current Openings page:

Please note the deadline for submitting materials is 15 January 2007. There is a link for information on what to include in auditions packages, and a statement concerning appearance and weight standards that also includes a link.

A PDF file of audition music will be available shortly.

Check out the Band's webpage: there is a lot of neat stuff, including info and recordings of all the performing groups, and by the end of the year that list of recordings should include tuba and euphonium solos.

It's their audition. They can run it any way they want.

If it's anything like the last few audition's we've had for the Marine Band, it's because 1)space is an issue in the building 2)players with 2 tubas take longer to get in and out of rooms, adding significant delays to the audition process and 3) they're hiring a section tuba player, not a soloist. Plenty of good stuff out there that'll work just fine on a big horn. Great list, BTW....

Oops ...

It is possible a couple of the excerpts had key and/or time signatures clipped off.

I think the only one that might not be clear (although it is very common) is George Washington Bicentennial March: it is a typical Sousa march, cut time, Eb major.

Doesn't really matter much. Most of the audition will probably be sightreading, much like the recent Euph audition.

Actually, I think this list is pretty much right on. Most orchestra vacancies require at least this many excerpts and the styles and technical difficulties represented should require a top-notch player to perform well. No doubt sightreading will be a major factor in any military audition (especially since much of the gig involves playing music with little or no rehearsal), but I can't see why anyone would complain about this list.

No, Kelly wasn't in for 20 years.

I think if you are a few pounds overweight they will give you a chance to lose the weight before you get enter their training program.

I think it's a prerequisite for admission - i.e. BEFORE training. Besides, it's a good idea to show up for training in the best shape possible - you don't want to be Pvt. Pyle! It's hard enough as it is.

I have a friend who is having a wonderful time in the regular Navy bands. She has about 7 years in now I think.

In those 7 years, she has had duty at San Diego, Hawaii, and now is part of a NATO band in Naples, Italy... They have some nice duty stations--great locals.

HOLY CRAP that version of the Navy Hymn is insane!

So they actually want you to play that whole part a K down an actave with the pedals? (well, CC tuba pedals) That looks so fun to play, if I could play it well...

I better get to work on my pedal tones!
