Tuba Vacancy - US Navy Band
The US Navy Band announces a vacancy for Tuba. Audition date is 29 January 2007. Here is a link to the Current Openings page:
http://www.navyband.navy.mil/auditions.shtml
Please note the deadline for submitting materials is 15 January 2007. There is a link for information on what to include in auditions packages, and a statement concerning appearance and weight standards that also includes a link.
A PDF file of audition music will be available shortly.
Here is a link to general info about auditioning for the Navy Band:
http://www.navyband.navy.mil/auditioninfo.shtml
Check out the Band's webpage: there is a lot of neat stuff, including info and recordings of all the performing groups, and by the end of the year that list of recordings should include tuba and euphonium solos.
Any other questions regarding auditions should be directed to Master Chief Musician Stuart B. McLean at (202) 433-2840.
Good Luck!

It's their audition. They can run it any way they want.TubaBob wrote:What's up with the Navy Band's

Besides, how many do you need for that rep?

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

If it's anything like the last few audition's we've had for the Marine Band, it's because 1)space is an issue in the building 2)players with 2 tubas take longer to get in and out of rooms, adding significant delays to the audition process and 3) they're hiring a section tuba player, not a soloist. Plenty of good stuff out there that'll work just fine on a big horn. Great list, BTW....

I called the band. You hit the nail on the head - space and time. Good call.JCradler wrote:If it's anything like the last few audition's we've had for the Marine Band, it's because 1)space is an issue in the building 2)players with 2 tubas take longer to get in and out of rooms, adding significant delays to the audition process and 3) they're hiring a section tuba player, not a soloist. Oops ...
Oops ...
It is possible a couple of the excerpts had key and/or time signatures clipped off.
I think the only one that might not be clear (although it is very common) is George Washington Bicentennial March: it is a typical Sousa march, cut time, Eb major.
As always, if you have any questions, call Master Chief Musician Stuart McLean at (202) 433-2840.

You could also take a viola, but I doubt that they'd get your sense of humor...TubaBob wrote:What's up with the Navy Band's

Audition List
XtremeEuph wrote: "Wow thats an insanely long and intense list of literature (from what ive seen anyway)"
Actually, I think this list is pretty much right on. Most orchestra vacancies require at least this many excerpts and the styles and technical difficulties represented should require a top-notch player to perform well. No doubt sightreading will be a major factor in any military audition (especially since much of the gig involves playing music with little or no rehearsal), but I can't see why anyone would complain about this list.
Good luck to all who audition.

No, Kelly wasn't in for 20 years.Paul W. wrote:was kelly in for 20 years now? i didn't think he had been in that long. wonder what prompted him to leave?
We went to high school together (he's two years older). What an amazing player and mentor. I wish him and his family all the best in his inevitably successful future endeavors.
Good luck, Kelly!
...and to all auditionees...good luck filling the man's shoes.

I hate to break this to you, but you ARE joining (and then representing) the US military!PORKCHOP wrote:I noticed that there is a weight requirement...so somebody could be a really good player and blow everyone else away but since he/she might be overweight they are automatically DQ'd??

I think if you are a few pounds overweight they will give you a chance to lose the weight before you get enter their training program.
