How about an old name that is never used enough:

Xyzzy!

And please don't get too off the wall or inventive with spelling. It only causes grief later.
Combining Julie and Martin gives J'Mar (or JuMar / JaMar) but we are just too pastey white bread to be able to pull that off.

I am partly of German heritage (also Italian and possibly a little Irish) and I though it would be interesting to hear teachers call out my son's name if we named him Schitt, since it is Germanic enough in appearance and I could always play the discrimination card if anyone protested. (We come from a long line of Schitt. My family is full of Schitt's.)

True story:
One of my wife's aunts works in the office at a hospital. A young lady wanted to name her baby the following compound name, but it was not allowed. She said they didn't understand and accused racism.
The name is:
Shi'Thead
Alternate pronunciations do not leave much to the imagination.

We gave our kids uncommon names:

Elliot is a girl, Catcher is a boy. They are too young to get any grief (Yet), but we do sure get some odd looks when we tell people their names.

I, therefor, recommend the name Sprocket. It was good enough for our cat.

Bob (not Robert) is good too. That way he'll be the first kid in his class to be able to spell it.

Ding Ding Ding.... You got it (Almost). The name, "Elliot" is a reference to a lot of great people. TS Elliot, Elliot Carter, Mamma Cas Elliot, Elliott bay Book Company... even Elliot - the insane female doctor on "Scrubs."

Catcher is a straight up Salinger reference. Yes, I know they will be beat up by bullies because mom chose non-standard names (with my full consent).

Here is a very interesting site that charts name usage over the years. It might even provide some inspiration:

http://www.babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html

My children are named Kira (after Jim Henson's "Dark Crystal") Hope (the first street we lived on... in Memphis) and Vance (my middle name... my first name is my dad's middle name) Ian (a nod to my wife's Scottish heritage). The only problem is that if my son continues the middle-name-becomes-first-name tradition... he will have to name his son Ian. My son is Hispanic!

Even though we still have til March, my wife is really pushing for a decision. Right now, she is pushing Wyatt or Parker but considering Franklin (calling him Frankie - and she thought Vinny was too NJ?)
