Conn 20J Valve Repair

Post by minnesotamike »

I have a 1950s Conn 20J. I'm having trouble with a guide pin that attaches to the top cap and runs down into the valve. It has come loose and I can't figure out how to get it to reattach. It is has some fluting on the top, but won't seem to stay in the valve cap. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

I'm sure that a half-ton of repair guys will point out the errors in my solution, but since they have not weighed in yet....

If this is what I think it is from the description, this pin is an alternate way of keeping the valve aligned with the ports. One end of it was originally "expanded" to provide an interference fit with a hole drilled in the cap. Over time, side loading has either made the hole slightly smaller or the knurled pin slightly smaller so that the pin falls out. Even a new pin may not fit tightly in the cap since the hole may be now too large.

My solution would be to machine a new pin with the shaft the same diameter, but with a slightly larger portion on the cap end. This end would be knurled and press-fit into the cap. Unfortunately this requires some machining. Other ways such as brazing, epoxy, etc., would affect future removal. Good luck, Neil
