My opinion is that it is easier to play the lower notes on a bass bone. Having the larger bore, with a larger mouthpiece (typically) aid in that. The thing that really does it for me is the double trigger. Now instead of playing low D in 4th position with the F trigger I can play it with both triggers depressed and then go out to 2 for the Db, 3 for C, and double trigger 4 for B natural. To me it's easier, but I'm also a valve person so having the valves helps my thinking when I'm playing trombone. I don't know if it's really true or not, but that's what my brain thinks so my perception has become my reality :D
