Hanging with the Tuba/Euph crowd.

Post by Matt Walters »

What is one of your favorite Tuba/Euphonium hangs?

Last year in December, some old tuba friends/customers stopped in the store, but we didn’t have enough time to catch up while I had to do my job. So, they hung out until closing and followed me home so we could enjoy the VFW bar (Just ask anyone who has seen it.) in the basement of my handyman special house. We tossed back a few beers, made some sandwiches and ate snacks while we solved the problems of the world and tubadom. That was a nice moment in time. I’ve been here at Dillon Music for going on 15 years and so many people have come and gone through these doors and my life that I loose track of them.

This Dec 7th, I get to just be another Tuba Geek that gets to try out horns, and talk tuba with other enthusiasts at Yamaha (689 5th Ave. (54th St. & 5th Ave. enter on 54th Street) 11th Floor) in NYC. And like going to the NYC Auto show, we won’t have to deal with a pushy salesman trying to “close the dealâ€

The Geek Nights we used to have in Atlanta. DVD's, tuba duets, music, good friends, and a great time.

Why did I ever leave?

Somehow I have a feeling there will be one underlying theme to this topic - tuba + alcohol of some sort........

Actually, no alcohol involved in the tuba geek nights... Strange, I know.

Hopefully I will see you on Thursday.

I remember once listening to the entire Ring Cycle in one night - a bunch of different players, all instruments - Finale of Gotterdamerung cam sometime around dawn over Boston...

Yeah, not all the great hangs involve beer, but many do. The best never get out of hand, as far as over-indulgence is concerned. That usually kills it for everyone.

What's a huttl?

Amongst aviators it is often said that any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. It's an even better landing when you can reuse the airplane.

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
