One weird thing, at such young of age....(did they say little or no musical instruction) , How did he know how to notate the Horn part apart from a Cello part, or a Trumpet part from a Bassoon.....................................The rules and tendencies of chord progressions, orchestras, and music in general? OMG~!!!! maybe hes one of those people who have seen every generation but are still like young. Haha jk

Sam Adler? I thought he wrote a bunch of books and stuff about composition. Thought he was pretty much the authority on that stuff.

Upon first viewing of the interview, I thought the same thing. But then I started thinking about it.

I don't think he was being an idiot. He just wants to make sure that the kid wasn't hell-bent on making it exactly the way its in his head without thinking about it. That path may lead to insanity before any other path!

Yup....Sam Adler knows a couple of things about composition. Ask his students Eric Ewazen, Fisher Tull, Dana Wilson, etc.....his book The Study of Orchestration is on my bookshelf to be sure.

I think what Adler was trying to say (without saying it) is that there is a difference between taking an artistic and an autistic approach. Jay's genius is unparalleled, no doubt, but if he is merely writing down what he hears--whether it's in his head or on the radio--what investment has he truly made to his own music?

I like to think that by pursuing an education in music, by maturing and progressing his compositional vocabulary, and further learning what else he might be able to say with his music, we will get to see, hear, and perform works that may well rival the likes of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahams, maybe even Kenny G.

I'm hooked. I can't wait to see what else will come of this incredible musician. Even if he does decide to be a cartographer.
