IE 7

The betas of IE7 are what finally drove me to Firefox. MS made Cleartype the default in IE7 (absolutely unreadable!), which was bad enough, but it also changed all the fonts in Outlook Express as well. The only solution was to uninstall.

Firefox does it all. I have no regrets.

...except for some pages on the M$ site. Try opening some http://www.microsoft.com pages in IE and then in Firefox. They look different--and some are non-functional in Firefox.

All I'm saying is that while Firefox is very good (and the betas of FF 2.0 look even better), don't ditch your copy of IE quite yet.

Does that surprise you? MS commonly buys companies for no other reason than to throw them under the bus. This is not a benevolent company we're discussing here...

Of course not--I've been following Microsoft since the late 70's. But dislike of M$ is no reason to jettison your copy of IE--remember that they also deploy (some wonderfully buggy) server-side software that sooner or later will bedevil Firefox and other browsers. Best to have a fall-back just in case.

...which is an excellent reason to disable automatic update. I swear that some of these "security updates" must replace half the operating system. Sort of like fixing a car by replacing everything but the VIN plates.

Yeah, now they'll be passing out coupons in January for a discount on Vista to make up for all the delays. About the nicest thing I've heard about Vista is that "it runs almost as fast as XP". And unless you're running a server, stay away from the x64 version of it--I couldn't get much to run at all, other than Microsoft Office.

Now that was the only reason I was interested in Vista was for the 64 bit version. I've had an Athlon 64 for a couple of years now and was hoping I could finally unleash all of its power. I guess not.

I thought that was already the case. It would be like using an Apple program on a PC; it shouldn't be done. As far which is better, though, that's another story.

I just downloaded and am currently running IE7, and I like it. I especially like the multiple windows within the central browser system. It really helps when you have to be on more than one website at once, and cuts back on the number of browsers you have up. Plus, the whole setup is a little more streamlined, which is always a plus.

Well, that run of luck ended. It seems that there is a problem that some folks have encountered using IE7 where it stops your machine from booting up. Just like in this thread:

I got my machine to finally boot after several attempts, did a backup of all important files and continued on. The pc continued to bog down more and more and finally crashed again in the same manner. I finally did a format and a complete re-install of the O.S. It was fun while it lasted, but I think IE7 is not quite ready for prime time. Y.M.M.V.

Correction: problem caused by bad hard drive, so the test will continue.

Since Windows Update was going to pester me until I did it, and eventually I'll be required to do it, I installed it this evening. So far, I've only gotten one "program not responding" box; and another time had to close it and restart because it kept saying any site I tried to hit was not available. Only two fatal errors in one evening. Not bad, huh? (cough cough).

Let's hand the space shuttle program over to M$.

There must be a disease out there. My copy of Real Player keeps pestering me to do an update; when I give in and say "OK", it responds that there are no updates available. I finally (today) just disabled the update check.

OTOH, Vista seems to always be doing something on the net whenever I look at the router. I have no idea what's going on, nor am I going to try to figure it out.

Let some poor sap who puts a mission-critical app on it be the guinea pig.
