YEP-842S Valves

Hey guys ... I regularly oil my valves. If I take one of my valves all the way out, I see like a little black line that I'm not sure just what it is. Could it be just left over residue from the valve oil? I'm using Al Case. The horn is only about 5 months old.

Probably. Can you wipe off the line at all? If you can, thats all it is. Try cleaning out your valve casings at least with some kind of lint free cloth......wash your pistons once in a while too.......or at least wipe off the old oil once in a while as well. Just make sure you dont leave any fibres of cloth in the casing or on the piston as to not scratch anything or make them sluggish.

even in the dry climate that is Lubbock TX... Hetmans works greats with my 842.

Yep, I was going to suggest Hetman's Light Piston Oil (HET-1) too. It's synthetic—but not as fussy as other synthetic oils. You don't have to worry about loaning your Hetman oil to a section mate if he runs out... it won't seize up his valves.

I've not been able to find Hetman oil sold locally (S. Florida), but order it for our whole section online. The best price I've been able to find is at Dillon Music in NJ ($4ea). Here's a direct link if interested:

I've been using Webster's oil on my 842S for a couple of years now. Hard to find, but I just order a bottle every time I buy a CD or some music from Steve's website and always seem to have an extra bottle around.....

I had to give up on Hetmans on my 842. It was depositing a soft, plastic like, clumping residue in my valve ports and tuning slides. I use a lot of valve oil, oiling before and after I play, so there was a lot of oil going through the horn. I assume that it was a residue left when the more volatile fractions vaporized. These clumps would start to form within a week or so of cleaning and would become a nuisance after about a month.

However, the performance of the valves with Hetmans was superb.

In any case, I started using the Yamaha valve oil which came with the horn. The valves work just as well with no residue.

JTJ, is that residue the kind that forms rings around valve casings as well as in the valve tubing of the horn?

If so, I have been having problems with that stuff since I got my 642. I never thought it could be the valve oil. I seem to remember it always being there, although i have been using Hetman's for the past couple years.

Yes, I get that yellow or beige residue too. I clean it out each month with my 'Brass Saver' brush and re-oil. I put up with that since Hetman's works so well.

Ryan -- yes, it can form rings as well. The substance is like a very soft plastic which is somewhat water soluble. More of a nuisance than a problem, but I got tired of it and went back to Yamaha oil.
