"Out there" CD's, anyone?

Does anyone on this board know of any tuba CD's that are a little bit "out there"? By that, I mean anything that is modernistic, avant-garde, or just plain different. I keep on reading good stuff about Oren Marshall's records, so I may check those out. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

For some great avant-garde jazz with tubas, check out Henry Threadgill. He has a band that is made up of an alto sax, electric guitar, drums, french horn, violin, and two tubas. I have his CD "Too Much Sugar for a Dime." It is out there and I really love it!

Any of the Drums and Tuba cd's would be good. I've seen them live a couple times and I enjoyed the shows. However, some would consider them to be "out there."

I second the suggestions of "Roodoo Voodoo" and "Heavy Metal Duo", and would add that you may want to check out some of Scot Ray's work. I took a chance on the Kingcake CD from eBay a while ago, and was pleasantly suprised.

Threadgill is an excellent recommendation (you will not necessarily hear much tuba in the foreground, but it is there and very present throughout). Also, look for "Trio Playing" with Oren Marshall, Derek Bailey (guitar) and John Butcher (saxophones).

If you can find a copy (probably by finding someone to burn one for you), Roger Bobo's "Tuba Nova" is a good one. There are only two pieces on it ("First Dream of Light" and "Saturnalis"), but it's well worth the search. Also, somewhere is a recording of a piece called "Signals" by Verne Reynolds, with Bobo and Tom Stevens playing. Very cool recording!

Not a cd, but an lp I heard years ago. Deep Throb by Pinguin Moschner(sp?). Why that stuck in my memory for 20 years?....how could it not?
Sounded like the guy sat down for 45 minutes and did whatever came to mind(dunno what state of mind he was in) weird....French, I think....

there is another pinguin moschner cd with guitarist joe sachse called "if 69 was 96" where they play music of jimi hendrix in a duo.

he uses some effects, mostly harmonizer mixed with multiphonics. they do some wild improvs, but there are also some really nice interpretations of classic hendrix songs.

it sort of "out", but not as out as "deep throb" which i also heard about 20 years ago together with john cradler.

Michael Vogt's CD has some amazing out there stuff. The Stravinsky elegy that's on there is very eerie!! and the wonderland duets in German are something to be heard!!!!
