According to the stats I just looked up, there were 537 murders in NYC (biggest city near me) in 2005. Sounds like a lot, but in a city with 8.2 million people, that's a staggeringly low figure. Apparently murders were up about 11% this year, even though overall crime dropped 7%. NYC is still the safest big city in America....go figure.

"Philadelphia's 2006 homicide total was 403 as of Wednesday, the first time the number has topped 400 in nearly a decade. There were 380 murders in 2005."

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

What would be of interest to me is if they would break these statistics down by how many were random acts of violence involving strangers. It would give a more useful indication of how dangerous an area is rather than lumping in all the acts of violence comitted by perps who knew or were related to their victims.

Maybe some folks will figure out that all those taxpayer dollars that got taken from early childhood and gang intervention programs and diverted to line the pockets of builders and real estate type folks to build unneeded convention centers, sports arenas, water front projects, etc. (because these would bring in truckloads of tourist dollars and make our city the envy of the nation (How gullible are you?)) might have something to do with the crime increase. ... Maybe ... but don't count on it.
And yes, that was a political statement. Shoot me now.

Pack it with bourbon or brandy (80 proof minimum), and you got a deal.
