How to practice with Arban

I'm an middle aged, community band tuba player, with an old horn, but Santa Claus brought me Jerry Young's wonderful Arban book anyway. Now that I have this book, I'm wondering how to incorporate it into my practice routine.

I play at an intermediate level, and what I've been doing is working on one piece from each section during each practice session. Is this a good approach? I searched a little bit on the web to see if someone had published a practice pattern for using this book, but didn't find anything.

By the way, in a week with the book, I think it works fine for BB tubas even though it is written for CC.

Go to Wes Jacob's website--URL is on your Arban's book. Find Wes' Arban's Routine--there are at least two. I use them daily, and I've found them most helpful.

I wore out my copy of the Arban trombone book when I was in high school. I got to be pretty good at picking out the pattern in those endless scale and arpeggio exercises so I didn't really have to read past the first few bars. My mind would wander as I finished the page. If I had been given a copy of the Kopprasch book back then I might have learned to focus on the page and read harmonic surprises better.

do you buzz mouthpiece only? the Arban is GREAT for that. The exercises are easy enough, for the most part, to work on pinpoint pitch placement, clean articulations, and time.

Find a recorder which will play back half speed. That will show you every flaw and foible in your playing. It can be deadly if you take it too much to heart, don't let it be a source of criticism as much as a show of what you can work on (or NEED to work on).

As with all my etude books, I tend to use them in about 3 ways.

1. Play what I enjoy to recharge my batteries to prevent burnout and have fun.
2. Play etudes which help facilitate correcting shortcomings discovered in working up other music like solos or excerpts.
3. Maintenance etudes which cover the fundamentals of musicianship to keep the face strong.

Of course this only works if I actually do it.
