But without football, Joe, there would be no halftime shows, and without halftime shows, that market segment of band directors seeking emergency repairs with little or no cash would dry up...

WOW! Where is all of this coming from? It's just a sport. Why don't we ban subjects about Bloke ranting? We should by his logic...we can't do anything about his rants, they take a lot longer than a football game, they aren't really interesting (humorous though). If you really enjoy ranting why don't you go on FOX News?

I THINK I would like football.

It seems like it would be fun to watch--along with a ton of other sports.

But the amount of $$$ they get paid disgusts me to the point where I am sick. So, I wont watch it.

I don't watch, but I attended an awful lot of football games from Jr.High band through College band. I think it's a hoot....but I can't bring myself to get serious about devoting time in my adult years to watching it. I just go to my kid's HS half-time shows to watch and hear them play.

In college, the entire band would stand on it feet and yell "PIE" when the clock would hit 3:14. Tooooooo many science major band geeks recognizing 3.14 as the "rounded" equivalent for the number Pi. Silly!

Avogadro's number was simly too cumbersome to cheer about.

I played little league football so I could learn what it was about, and so I would know I made the right decision not to play in high school to the preservation of my musculo-skeletal system, especially my knees, and my neurological system, and otherwise general health, as well.

But, I must confess, without football, I would not have been asked to carry a souzy for half-time, and I wouldn't have found out I like tuba/souzy better than trumpet, and (so on and so forth, until eventually) I wouldn't be here posting.

So I endure football as it opened my eyes and ears to a much better way of playing.

My brother is a major jock and football is like a religion to him. Football got him a full ride scholarship- almost to his doctorate and his three sons are all everything in high school football and guaranteed (baring injury) of full rides through college. Football has served Mike well. He can barely walk, but hey, you can't have everything.
Where the heck else is a high school musician going to find an audience in the thousands to play to?
How else are majorettes and cheer leaders as well as hotties in the stands going to get to show leg and earn their Mrs. degree?
Do you realize that if these thugs weren't out on that field-beating the crap out of each other- they would be setting up an ambush in some alley-FOR YOU AND ME!

Though this point has somewhat been made, i contend we would have virtually NO music programs in the south and probably several other areas of the country without football.Communities will move heaven and earth to start a band in a small town when the football team is doing well.Many principals are former coaches who understand the value of having a band in the stands on friday.This thought may hurt our egos in the band world but i contend that it is a FACT.I've seen successful football programs pump huge amounts of money into band programs on the high school and college level.I don't much care for watching football either but i do like selling sousaphones and drumlines

I may not be smart enough to tell who's really smart but I notice which way the cash is flowing. We are lucky that they believe live music adds to the pagentry. At least we benefit some.
Doc, the tenor on the "be our guest" video has the lung capacity most of us can only pray for.

There is, of course, one tradition of marching band that does predate football: military.

So you play for an army that fights it out on the battlefield, or for a team which vicariously fights it out on a gridiron. Same thing, just not quite so many get killed. Where do you think the basic design of marching band uniforms came from? With an overlay of blue & white instead of black & red, and a fake fur white hat instead of a real black bearskin one, my high school marching band uniform was an exact copy of the guards at Buckingham Palace. Complete with plume.

West Point is used often enough as well
