Plastidip might be fun to experiment with but I suspect that it is probably a bit too 'rubbery' to use on the entire spring and it would probably stick to the sides of the casing. You might try dipping each end for only about 1/4"... making sure the ends are still square with the centerline of the spring. Have fun... and let us know how it works out.

Done that--piston oil eventually gets to the stuff and, as Wade speculated, the stuff starts to disintegrate.

Well-fitted springs should be absolutely quiet, in any case.

Idle thought, and no way to do it, but wonder what this would be like on the inside of one's horn, if you could get decent coverage?
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

they're also alot more expensive than the Allied springs that will fit.

Where we'd sell a spring for 1buck, the Yammies go for 5

If you're going to shorten the springs please consider this:
1) Since they are wound, you can be very precise in the amount you cut off. With calipers measure the diameter of the wire in the spring. Then a full circle will cut that much off, 1/2 circle will cut 1/2 the diameter off, etc., proportionally, so you can nip ever so small bits as necessary until you get the exact length.
2) Cut equally off both ends, as the springs have the tight coils at the ends for stability and the expanded coils in the middle for flex. Otherwise, if you cut it all off just one end, you risk the spring starting to float, which is one thing you're trying to solve to begin with.

Not a bad concept. I guess we'll just have to proof-read out comments from now on. ... and think twice before making nasty remarks  (I was going to say 'nasty crack' instead of 'nasty remarks'... but I'll bet we'd all be shocked at the picture Doc would probably post!
