Tuba Duets Available

Hello Everyone!

There have been a number of requests on the board for tuba duets. It's difficult to really know what your buying unless you hear them.

I've recommended on a number of occasions a book called "Goodies for Two Tubas" by Sanae Kanda published in 2001 by LaMi Publications. Again, unless you hear them - or take a chance and just buy them - you don't know what you're getting.

SO, below are links to MP3s of each of the 10 duets in the book. The sound samples were put together pretty quickly in order to simply have something available (so please be forgiving!) that will let you hear what's in the book.

Thank you for taking the time to do this for us, Mike. I listened to all of them and some more than once. Very good!
Did you play both lines? If not, who played the other line?

I have this duet book and I love it! The book covers many different styles of music and forces the players to work on musicianship & tuning. I highly recommend it for all the tuba players out there. I personally cannot wait for the book II to come out

How difficult are the duets grade wise?

Hello again,

I am playing both parts. Given the time I had to play both parts there are some pitch things and some mistakes here and there that are driving me a little crazy, but it was hard to tune some intervals with headphones on. Then again, there are some spots that actually have major or minor seconds and then expand. So some dissonance is on purpose.

The level of the duets range from very easy to a little more difficult. I think the highest note in any of the duets is the C right above the bass clef staff. One of the easiest ones is "Single Line". However, the difficulty is in copying each other's articulation, tone, pitch and style so that it sounds like one instrument. So each is difficult in it's own way, but not necessarily "physically" difficult.

These duets have been written so that some can be used as performance pieces and other ones teachers can use with students...ie "Single Line" and "Tune It!" etc. As you can hear, stylistically they run the gamut. Personally I love this book! There are many duet books on the market, and A LOT that I personally enjoy, but I think this one is a little different than others. That's what I really like.

I keep trying to encourage Sanae to write another book of these duets, but she doesn't think these are very good. (A true artist not liking their own work.) So I thought it would be best to record them so that people can hear them first, maybe this will help to generate interest in the book and then she'll feel that they really are great!

Hi Tim (and All)!

No problem! Actually I think you're right and it's not your fault. The ordering process needs to be set up better on the site. There shouldn't be any challenges to order. So please don't worry - it's not you, and you didn't say anything wrong. I am currently in the process of having the entire site reworked to make ordering, shipping costs and other related items much easier to work with. So, from my perspective - I don't think it's a very efficient way of trying to place an order.

I just got back from being out of town yesterday and I've got an inbox full of emails regarding the duet book!!! (THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH!!) Please be patient with me and I will get back to everyone that has expressed interest! Maybe this will mean I can talk Sanae into a BOOK 2!

At any rate, if anyone has ANY questions please email me personally and I'll get you answers. My apologies for any inconveniences with the site. It will soon be easier to order.

Hello All!

Due to the great response to Sanae Kanda's duets, she is now talking about writing a second book! I'm not sure when they will be available, but she is at least thinking about it again! That's a great step forward! Thank you to all that responded!

Also, some more news - which I'll start a new thread on - a number of euphonium players wrote to me asking if the book is available for two euphoniums. It hadn't been before, but due to the apparent interest - it will be in the very near future!

So again, thank you to all that responded. It looks like the time I took to record the duets was time well spent!

FYI - Sanae also has a number of solo tuba and piano pieces available. Sound samples of these pieces will also be available in the near future.
