Music that is more enjoyable...

Post by tubaguy9 »

Thought I'd put this up...let people know that I don't just complain about boring music, but I enjoy the more fun music given to me... So, in order to understand a few pieces, I'd like to find out about the pieces (Honor Band material)
For Smetana's Three Dances of the Bartered Bride (original score), is there a tuba part? I was given the Bass 'bone part...
Well...the least favorite of the fun ones, is Rosalind in the Forest of Arden...Did Alfred Reed dislike the tuba?
In Fanfare and Flourishes, by James Curnow, is the piece a slow 2/2, or a fast 4/4? The part has almost too many 16th's in the tuba part to be a faster 2...
In Daniel in the Lion's Den, by W. Francis McBeth, is the solo tuba part completely different than the regular Tuba part?

Just thought I'd ask these questions...
I think I might end up as a grumpy old man when I get old...

I can tell you that at least the overture (of the Bartered Bride) does not have a tuba part.

Maybe that also goes for 3 dances...

Uh... yeah.

The tuba solo part is THE part and the whole rest of the ensemble is accompaniment. Check out this link (with sound clip) to hear *Daniel* Perantoni play the solo that was written... have you guessed it... for him.

I played Fanfare and Fluorishes in a community band over the summer. The director took it in 2/2, with the tempo somewhere around 76.

Since I am a eupher, I didn't play the tuba part, but heard them, and looked over their part once or twice.

I suppose this is an instance where it would be helpful to know one's scales cold

Good luck with it :D
Willson 2955 Euphonium - BB1
Sterling Virtuoso Eb tenor horn - Wick 2A
B&S/VMI 3301 BBb tuba - RT-50
Bach Stradivarius 42B Trombone - 5G

Definately in 2, round 80 for the half note, and I prefer it even faster. The main theme is the beginning of Charpentier's Te Deum (with some slight alteration/misunderstanding) which is an overly known tune around here since all international European broadcasts start with it.
If I recall correctly, the 16th come 2 or 3 times in a scale. So much is happening, it won't be noticed if you don't play a perfectly executed Bb major scale.
