well here's my spiel on interlochen.

i was an 05 camper and loved it. it was an amazing experience. you get to study with Dr. chuck guy, Phil Sinder and Charlie Villarubia. that whould be enough i would think but there is more. i would say the tuba studio is competitive. the top 5-6 tuba players are really top notch (from my exp.). i would recomend it without a doubt.

you should also look at "The Blast of Brass Conference". it's cool because they always bring in a professional playing guest. when i did that in 04 Gene pokorny was the guest artist.

Anyone remember the Shoe cartoon when Cosmo sends Skylar off to "Summer Music Camp" (with his sousaphone) to Parris Island?

I remember it well, I was at PI at the time! (Was that really 16 years ago?!?) My mom clipped them and mailed them to me every week. I looked forward to those cartoons almost as much as I looked forward to the "motivational" photos coming from my girlfriends at the time! Oh, the memories...

This is more than just a plug! Yes I teach tuba at both of these camps but I'm only trying to spread the wealth! Serious high school students take note!

If you live in Maryland- a great camp is the Monumental Brass Quintet Summer Brass Institute! We are going into our fifth year with the camp. Previous guest artists at SBI have been David Fedderly, Andrew Hitz, Craig Arnold, and Angela Cordell. Probably one of the hottest summer orchestra programs available is the Performing Arts Institute, (in recent years this program has gained much attention as one of the 'big three' giving BUTI and Interlochen some fierce competition). This is a six week boarding camp in NE PA. The conductors and faculty are all top notch. In the summer of 2006 we had a serious infection of MONSTER Tuba/ euph players. I think for tuba the competition for acceptance is going to be quite high but please do not be discouraged from applying! http://wyomingseminary.org/pai/index.htm

HUGE ditto for both those camps! It is well worth traveling to PA for PAI, as there are phenomenal campers and counselors from all over the east coast, the midwest, and last year, China! Last year was my first year at PAI, and I was amazed at the strength of the ensembles and faculty. The PAI tuba studio was excellent as well (thanks mostly to Mike Parker)! Also, if Mike Nickens is still teaching there next year, you get two very different, but equally awesome tuba teachers if you go for the whole six weeks.

Did I really neglect to mention that I am one of two tuba faculty at PAI!?!! Yes Mike Nickens is also on faculty and he is a fabulous improv performer and teacher with a super- cool, very positive attitude that is quite inspirational!

The "Blast of Brass Conference" is pretty fun. I went in 05 and Blair Bollinger was the guest player... Overall the experience for me wasn't socially thrilling, but i have to say I left the camp as a much better player. I never have heard of Interlochen, are there any special qualifications? I know at BOB if you had the money you got in, musical ability determined chair placement.
