I know, this is online, but it's a decent recording. Be aware that the cadenzas have had lives of their own, with many having the "authoritative" versions of what RVW wrote.

this was the first recording of the V Dubs that I heard also, but I've learned since (in an earlier thread on this board) that there are many things wrong with this recording. Jacobs was actually sick, the cadenza is just him practicing etc etc (someone who knows please share the truth?)

My teacher told me that the orchestra got the parts to the concerto right before they recorded it and it took them a few tries to get the parts nailed down. Mr. Jacobs was playing the whole tune, along with cadenza, about five times.

It seems odd that they would record him while he was "off to the side" just fiddling around through the cadenza without him knowing.

I have a question about Floyd Cooley's recording of the VW on the Friends in Low Places CD. Was his cadenza spliced in?

Whatever things may be, it does't matter because these are two of my favorite recordings to listen to.

Maybe I'm strange, but I didn't like the idea of listening to a recording of anything before I played it for my undergraduate or graduate recitals. I used some notes I read in the old TUBA Journal, which explained that some of the notes in the part were wrong--these came the late Philip Catelinet, for whom the concerto was written. It worked out very well. I played it for my Junior Recital.
