Mirafone model 186 - pro or student, that is the question!?

Post by Bondejohnson »

I was asked how to tell the difference between a Mirafone 186 BBb "pro" horn from a Mirafone 186 "student" model. As all Mirafones I have owned through the years have, to my knowledge, just had a serial number under the logo, I sat back, and with my most professorial looking face said, "Duh, I dun-no... "
Clearly the smashed up Mirafone 186 BBb at the local high could be considered a student model. Is there an actual distinction though? I submit the following question to the Freak Jury for comment or enlightenment: What IS the difference between the aformentioned two, if any, and is it identifiable?

Regards,
Bonde

Mostly cosmetic--bits of nickel here and there and engraving. Sound-wise, they're the same instrument. Early 186S models didn't have the bell garland; later ones do.

Short answer; NO, there is no sound difference that the average listener would note. However, the sound 'feels' a little different in the horn's vibrations (very minor).
