I think some of this is old but some is new. I just found the link. I must order the new CD.

Yes, I have picked up all the CDs of the Melton Tuba quartet I have found. I really like their sound!

I have found it quite illuminating that I find I can pick out the sound of the BBb (Fafner on the latest CD) in the group from the F tubas as a distinctively different tone as the euphonium.

Heiko was a hoss even in high school...I met him at the National Music Camp at Interlochen in 1983. He was one of the concerto winners that summer, performing the Bozza Concertino with a chamber orchestra. He can really make the small horn sing...I'm assuming he's playing the top part most of the time on a very small-bore F.

But wow, some of the clips played there feature some screaming high E-flats...unbelievable. Anybody know for sure if these excerpts are played on the tubas in the photo, or did someone sneak in a euphonium?

I have got the CD and it says in the booklet notes:
We can still claim to be the only ensemble in Europe actually formed by four tuba players, switching parts and instruments as we like: using either 1 euphonium and 3 tubas, 2 euphoniums and 2 tubas, or our favourite: the unique sound of four tubas, specially featuring the grand contrabass tuba in BBb at the bottom.

Doc, If your German good enough to write that well, you must hail from New Braunfels or thereabouts.
