Looking for Tuba Solos with Tape

Hey,

I want to play a Tuba Solo with Tape accomp. on my senior recital. I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions. I am looking for something contemporary and avant-garde. I have heard rumors of one such piece that was written by a tuba player in a Coast Guard band. I am told that it is basically a call and response between himself and a pod of whales. Does anyone know the name of this piece or where I can get it? Thanks!

This isn't the one you are asking about, but I did Three for One by Wyatt on a recital, and it is a great piece for tuba and tape.

Tuba and tape pieces were "in vogue" for a short period of time, and I think some of those pieces are worth continuing to play because of the significant role they played during the "toddler" years of tuba solo literature development.

I'm not sure how far past the toddler years we are now.

One that's fairly difficult but rewarding is "Malta" by Lejaren Hiller. Roger Bobo did a piece called "Cadence VI" for tuba and tape. There's also Charles Ruggiero's "Fractured Mambos."

There is also a really cool piece by Curtis Olson called Incurzions. I believe it is published my Encore. The third movement is a lot of fun for both the performer and the audience.

In the same vein as New England Reveries, Corwell also has a pretty accesbile piece called aboriginal voices that is with CD accompaniment.

You might also look into a piace by David Cope called Spirals. It involves 4 tracks that the performer prepares. It is available thru Seesaw Music. Another neat one that is on Benjamin Pierce's new CD is called Tubaku. It has 2 tracks, a higher one and a lower one. you could record one, and perform the other Track Live with your own recording. Those two seem like they would be a lot of fun to prepare, record, and perform. Plus, if you record all the tracks, you could perform them in any number of different varieties.
