Tuba and Percussion

Post by Julie W »

Hello,

I'm investigating my options in chamber music and hoping for some help. We have a really great percussion studio here and some of my friends have expressed a willingness to aide me in my quest for tuba and percussion music. I am already aware of the Penn- Capriccio for Tuba and Marimba and the Hartley Sonata for Tuba and Percussion Ensemble. My searches on the Internet have lead my to titles but no real information can anyone offer some information and/or recordings of any of the following?

Rice-Thing for Tuba and Timpani
Barber-Theme and Variations for Tuba and Percussion
Hackbarth- Duo for Tuba and Percussion
Lund- Music for Tuba and Mallet Instruments
Heussenstamm - Tubacussion

I just ordered Jeffery Jarvis' CD Music for Tuba and Percussion and that offers other selections from those above.

Can anyone offer me any guidance?

Thanks,

Julie

You might want to check out Eric Ewazen's "The Devil Septet," published by SeeSaw. This piece calls for four tubas, piano and two percussionists. There is some improvisation for all parts and everyone gets a good challenge. It's a little further out than some of Ewazen's better known works but, I think, quite listenable.

Velvet Brown recently put out a new cd that consists entirely of works for tuba and percussion. It includes:

Concerto for Tuba and Percussion- James A. Beckel
Latin Jazz Suite- Alice Gomez
Digression Nr. 5- Franz Cibulka
Dance Movements- Roland Szentpali
High-Life- Alice Gomez

Quite an excellent cd. I'd highly recommend checking it out.

Australian composer Barry McKimm is currently putting finishing touches on a piece for tuba and 2 percussionists commissioned for and by Per Forsberg. I'm not sure of the title or publishing arrangements, but you could email him and ask! barrymckimm@hotmail.com

He also wrote Andante Tranquilo (that is on one of Gene Pokorny's CDs,) Tuba Concerto, and Concerto for Bass Tuba.

Hope this helps too!

Julie-
I just noticed you are in the Milwaukee/Appleton area. Contact Marty Erickson. He and his wife, Alison Shaw (a percussionist) have a duo called Balance. They have a load of music commissioned for/by them and that they arranged themselves. Great resource!
