How private is any web-based bulletin board or forum?
About the same as a changing room in a clothing store that is open to the floor of the store with just a small curtain that is only about 7' high and a foot off the ground so the clerks can glance under to make sure you're not trying to steal the clothing by putting it on under what you wore into the store.
How private is "private"?

Google ads are based on keywords contained on pages Google indexes. If the page containing the Google ads is new or has never been indexed, then a basic ad is served, the googlebot crawls the page and the next time a page comes up which is based on the indexed keywords.
With all that said. Google can't read private messages because that would require a login. In fact, you will probably notice that a large number of Google Ads on pages which require a login to read are ads for things with the keywords contained on the login page. I personally see lots of ads based on the keyword Log. I see log splitters, log cabins, and log furniture as examples. I also see ads for things based on the word error.
What specific ads are you seeing?
To see what I mean, view something which requires a login, such as a private message or a membership profile, or by clicking the email or PM button to an individual. Copy the URL in the browser. Now logout of TubeNet and then paste the URL back into the browser and try to view the page. You will get the login page. This is the same page Google sees when it attempts to index your private messages.
So anything that requires a login can;t be indexed by Google.
