Since Vietnam is half in the tropics, there is no Daylight Savings Time. That in itself is a good reason to be here. I remember in high school when we had year round DST. If memory serves me correctly, in 1973, we just didn't go back to Standard Time in October. It wasn't so bad until we went back to school after Christmas break and school started at 7:30. The sun came up at 8:00!

I use an iBook (one of the white ones running Mac OS 10.3.9). A couple of days ago Hanh and I had to move. I am not now connected to the Internet with that computer. Even though I turned off the automatic time check, it still keeps trying to call home! Our present residence is only temporary. Hanh is only 4'11" (and disabled) and some places are too small for her! I tried to wash dishes tonight and hurt my back because the sink is only three feet from the floor! And I don't have back problems!

Indeed. I hated it then. I hate it now.

When I am done with my work in Vietnam, I am moving to Arizona. It is the only of the 48 conterminous states determined to fight the dreaded disease of DST. But stay away from TUBA CITY. Being on the Navajo Reservation, it is the only incorporated city in Arizona which changes its clocks.

ON A TRIVIAL NOTE: 70 years ago, clocks were set an hour ahead on the last Sunday in April and then they were set back on the last Sunday in September. Only five months of DST back in those days!

If the display time is off by an hour here in the forum, just change it to the correct time under "profile" above.

 I don't know... If I weren't computer literate, i'd think this was pretty spooky. Everything sets itself. We don't need to do anything.

I just found out the hard way (ie CEO telling me in line for lunch that he is disappointed) that Cingular phones running Microsoft Windows Mobile will NOT automatically update, even when the DST patch is installed. Also, all meetings will show up an hour early until the correct time on the phone is manually set.
Nice to know that Microsoft could screw up something as simple as a phone.
Time to switch to iPhones.

I can confirm that. I installed the patches more than a week in advance, the Wizard confirmed installation, and I still had to reset a couple of them manually.

Computers can be manually updated with no problem. It's when the software tries to the do the switch automatically that there's a problem. And, of course, time-of-day-sensitive real-time systems.

The cell phones get their time from the infrastructure, not within the phone. So, they only had to patch it on their side of the plant.

WWV, huh? I love their play list. It all sounds like times from a clock!

I'll go with Joe on this one. My usually unflappable seven year old is VERY upset about the time change. She argues about dinner time and especially bed time. She has started a first grade letter writing campaign to our state representatives. We found out through a telephone conversation that her grandmother did the same when she was a first grader!
