Thoughts on performing Plau

I'm interested in performing the Concerto for Tuba and String Orchestra by Arild Plau sometime next semester for my recital and I would love to have strings accompany me rather than a piano.

So here are some thoughts and questions on the matter.... It would be very difficult to organize a string orchestra just for a recital so I'm thinking something like one or two players per part, like a string quintet of some sort. Do you think it would work balance wise? Do you think it would still have the same or close musical effect as having a full string orchestra? Any idea on how expensive is it going to be to obtain the string parts? If the string parts are too expensive, do you know if it would be legal to arrange the piano part to strings and perform it?

Illegal, but you could ask permission and that might work!

I like the idea of using just one player per part. I would be interested to hear how this works out, if you decide to do it.

Hmm...I honestly can't see that sounding very good. I think the string parts would sound thin and the tuba would overpower them. If it were me, I'd either get the full string parts and a full string orchestra or just do it with piano.
Are you at a small school? I've seen full string orchestras on recitals before - maybe 12 to 16 players is definitely manageable. Ask early and bribe with pizza

I have to do something thinking about this. I would love to play the piece with strings, but 200+ dollars for the rental parts and trying to arrange a small string orchestra might be too much of a hassle.... or maybe it'll be worth all that, I don't know.

If the recital is part of requirements for a degree, you might be able to get your college/university (perhaps the library) to cover a portion (if not all) of the rental fees.
